How to promote your music in 2020

Rema's latest music Ginger Me

We are in 2020 and there are lots of innovations in the Nigerian music industry. One of such innovations is in music distribution. Instead of relying on physical stores, any musical sound could be distributed through digital music stores. This is the power of the innovations in the ICT sector.

Of note, the innovations rub off on every aspect of human endeavours. The music industry is not left out. And true to the power of ICT, Nigerian artistes are reaping the rewards of pushing their sounds beyond the shores of the country. While the likes of Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid are dominating the global music stage, there are inevitable opportunities for upcoming artistes.

Meanwhile, there are lots of talented upcoming artistes out there; a few one could bank on to become superstars in future. But these artistes are not on the radar to be discovered yet. Why? They are not promoting their music & brands the right way. Neither are they reaching out… We did point out what most upcoming artistes are not doing right here

So, it is 2020. How does an artiste promote his music and brand? The following tips would be helpful:

Make good music

There’s no way we cannot echo this. Make good music! Do not be in a hurry to push out any sound. Don’t waste your resources and time. It is only good music that will take you to the stars. Ask Fireboy DML. Ask Rema. With good music your trademark, your limit is beyond the skies.

Distribute your music

The first line of promotion after producing any sound should be distribution. Digital distribution makes your music available to be streamed from any part of the world. It also offers an artiste opportunities to earn royalty from their creative works.

Be innovative

Promotion requires innovation just as making good music. It requires a few tricks to get the attention of a target audience. The ordinary approach of an artiste uploading his singles to a few blogs is now obsolete. An upcoming artiste must think of innovations that will make news headlines or trends on social media.

Build your fanbase

As an artiste, you are going nowhere without building your fanbase. In reality, the fans make you in the music industry. There’s no Davido without his over 20m fans. That’s a fact! The fans push your music. They are your ride or die. You’re not doing well, sir(sic) if you’re not building your fanbase.

Reach out

An effective approach to promotion is to reach out. Reach out to the music industry superstars. They could accept featuring in any of your tracks. That’s massive stuff you need to ‘blow’. You could get Wizkid to feature in your track if you make good music, promote right and reach out.
